Is your old gas boiler costing you money in higher fuel usage and repair cost? If your existing boiler is 15 years old or more, or needs a major repair, then replacing it altogether will avoid waste and expensive call outs. So if you are considering upgrading your old boiler to a new high efficiency boiler: The team at Rubex Energy are here to advise you in making the right choice. All our heating advisers have professional qualification in energy efficiency and a full knowledge of the range of boilers available.

There are three different types of domestic heating and hot water boilers, combination boilers (known as ‘combi's’), system boilers and open vented boilers. Since April 2005 your new boiler must, by law, be a high efficiency boiler or condensing boiler.

What is a condensing boiler?

You've probably heard of the term 'condensing boiler' and you may be thinking how does it fit with the 3 boiler types.

Condensing boilers work on the principle of reusing heat that would normally be rejected into the atmosphere from the flue of standard efficiency (non-condensing) boiler.
As a result, the temperature of the gases from the flue of a condensing boiler is typically 50-60°C compared with 120-180°C in a current non-condensing boiler. This creates a condensate (hence the name 'condensing'), which is harmlessly expelled as vapour through a flue and as liquid through a convenient drain point.

How energy efficient are they?

SEDBUK ‘A’ rated boilers operate with an annual average efficiency of over 90%*.  Typically, older types of conventional boilers only achieve efficiencies of 56%*. That means your condensing boiler will use 35% less energy to deliver heating and hot water to your home. This is how a condensing boiler can save as much as 35p in every £1* you spend on energy.  This can amount to a saving of over £240* on your annual home heating bill.

Fitting modern boiler controls such as programmable room thermostats, full programmers and thermostatic radiator valves can also make a significant difference to the amount of fuel a boiler uses. Homeowners and tenants should also be aware that turning the thermostat down by just 1oC can cut 10% off heating bills.

To ensure that boilers continue to run efficiently, regular annual servicing is essential.
