A boiler service is like an MOT on your car, it checks for safety and correct operation. Boiler servicing confuses many people. They are confused about why it should be done. What happens if it is not carried out regularly? They are even suspicious that very little is done during a boiler service. So here are some answers about boiler servicing.

At Rubex Energy we carry out a full inspection of your boiler during a service.
When a boiler or gas appliance appears to be working well, there could be hidden faults, these will be revealed by a proper service. For example, a device, which turns off the gas (thermocouple) if the pilot light is blown out. Should this fail to work, you could have gas leaking into your house, but how do you know if yours still work? Well this will be tested during the servicing procedures; we test the whole gas installation for correct operation.

What is included in a gas boiler service...

  • A visual inspection to ensure the position of the boiler meets current standards

  • The boiler is activated to check for any running faults. We look at the flame, it should be a bright even blue any other type of flame (orange/yellow or flickering flame) would indicate a potential problem.

  • Remove boiler casing to check main components i.e. Heat Exchanger, Main Gas Injectors, Burners, Spark/Sensor probe for signs of cracking and other damage.

  • Check water and gas pipes for any signs of gas leaks

  • Ensure flue terminals are unobstructed and internal flue components are properly sealed.

  • Clean carbon/soot from inside combustion chamber (Carbon residue in the combustion chamber can lead to Carbon Monoxide poisoning)

  • Replace inner casing as necessary before lighting the boiler

  • Activate boiler and check correct functioning and check safety controls.

  • Adjust gas valve to maintain the burner combustion efficiency.

  • Carryout an analysis of the flue gases by using a flue gas analyser, this will indicate efficiency and levels of carbon monoxide emitting from the boiler. It will also give a CO/ CO2 ratio and this will be compared against the legal limits.

  • Where a gas seal is broken a tightness test must be carried out before replacing the boiler casing.

  • Re-place boiler case and ensure the case seal is fully engaged.

  • Finally carryout a gas tightness at the incoming gas meter, this will confirm the soundness and integrity of your entire gas installation to your home

The servicing procedure as described above will vary for different boilers, but our engineers will follow a sequence for servicing your boiler.
